Making Light Work

The Rank Prize Fund is funding a curriculum development and CPD project to support A Curriculum for Excellence and to support physics and science teaching to S1/2 pupils through optics and modern optoelectronics.  The first pilot stage of this project, is to hold a funded minisymposium 'Making Light Work' at Ballathie House Hotel in Perthshire over 3 days in November 2007.  At this event it is intended that teachers, university researchers, and others with various expertise will plan and develop suitable pupil activities, teacher resources, equipment and CPD to allow teachers to support physics teaching through modern applications and meet some of the requirements of A Curriculum for Excellence.

Ten physics teachers and two non-physics science teachers will be required to work collaboratively with the university researchers and others during the minisymposium and then to help deliver CPD sessions on the materials developed.

The project is being lead by Prof. Ian Shanks and Prof. Wilson Sibbett who have links with the Rank Prize Fund with a small steering group including Rhona Goss, Miles Padgett, Catrina Bryce and Stuart Farmer.  Several other contributors including Gregor Steele and Bob Kibble have already agreed to be involved.

A flyer for the event can be downloaded from the Curriculim Development section of the SPUTNIK website http://sputnik.iop.org or by clicking on this link

If you would like to be involved, know someone you think should be involved or would like more information please contact me for further details at stuart.farmer@btinternet.com

Names of those interested need to be with me by 14th of May in order to be considered at a meeting of the steering committee shortly thereafter.
