New ASE Scotland Chair

Dear members,

It is with great pleasure that I hand over the Chair of Region 8 to Heather Earnshaw. I am looking forward working with her. Many of you will need no introduction, but for those of you who do: Heather teaches Physics at George Watson's College in Edinburgh. She started a P5 science club when she joined the school and helps senior pupils run their Science and Engineering Society and until recently she chaired the South East Scotland section.

I have been encouraged over the past year by the fellowship and generosity of the members I have had the privilege to meet and would have liked to meet many more. In particular I owe my personal thanks to Steuart Cuthbert who retired recently as Field Officer for Region 8. His unstinting work on behalf of us all to keep the region ‘on track', his talent as an organiser and event manager, his tireless efforts to make the annual conference the success it has been over many years, his networking and, of course, his inestimable expertise and knowledge (not to say generosity) with whisky have endeared him to members and many others in the science education world across Scotland, nationally and internationally. I hope he continues to be an active member now he is free from the duties of being a field officer. He will, I know, be welcome at all our gatherings.

I will chair the conference working group for 2014 so do feel free to contact me about ideas for the next conference- or better still, join the planning group.

Best wishes
Carolyn Yates
